Improve Your Play

Three more "Improve Your Play" nights have been announced; they will take place on the first Monday clubnight of February (6^th), March (5^th) and April (2^nd).

They will take place towards the end of clubnight on 1 or 2 courts (subject to demand) and are open to all members so come along if you want to improve your: serve; forehand; backhand; net shots; clears; tactics; or indeed anything else!

WDBA Fun Mixed Doubles Tournament

The first of this season’s WDBA badminton tournaments is back after last season’s successful trial run.

The Fun Mixed-Up Doubles Tournament is a tournament whereby entrants play with different partners throughout the evening. Entrants enter individually, not as pairs.

Mixed Doubles Result

Mens Doubles

After the 6-team round-robin, the top two pairs played the final and the next two played for 3^rd place.

In the final, Theresa Smith & John Hepworth were victorious over Chrissie Bynam & Matt Pascoe with Helen Suter & Yip Lieu third.

MatchPoint Level Doubles Result

The results from the first tournament are in.

Mens Doubles

After a close 5-team round-robin, the top two pairs played the final and the next two played for 3^rd place.

In the final, Pete Burgess & Tony Carter took honours from Paul Hoff & David Strugnell with Chris Luscombe & Matt Pascoe third.

Ladies Doubles

Again, the top two pairs contested the final with Alice Morrice & Fiona Norton winning over Jo Francis & Linda Stephenson (who won all of their double-round-robin matches!). Carolyn Cooper & Theresa Smith were third.

Many thanks to Mike Newton-Woof for running the evening and to Paul Hoff who turned up to watch and ended up as stand-in for injured Darran Taylor.

Play starts at 8pm sharp; games are played using "old" rules.

Level doubles partnerships will be drawn randomly, so you don't need to find a partner to enter!

Mixed doubles are entered as a pair; "A" team players cannot play together.

Entries close on the Monday club night before each competition.

Handicaps will be determined by the selection committe.

National Badminton Week

Next week (14^th to 22^nd) October is National Badminton Week.

The aim is to promote badminton and as such our club-night (Monday 16^th) is being taken over by BadmintonEngland: they will be running free coaching on all four courts for players of all levels, so come along and bring your friends (especially if they don't currently play!).

New Pricing Structure

The new fees structure has been agreed for the 06/07 season (Silver membership has been dropped and Gold membership yearly fees reduced):

A £10 reduction per person is made where BadmintonEngland and Hampshire fees are paid elsewhere.

Yearly membership fees can be paid in two halves: the first by the end of September, the second by the end of December. Unfortunately, due to huge cash flow issues at the start of the season, this option will carry a £20 surcharge this year.

Additionally, a LATE payment surcharge of £10 will be levied to any outstanding fees from 1^st January 2007.

Members who choose to pay the Bronze fee will NOT be considered for team selection, but may be selected as a reserve if they so wish!

A superb performance by Theresa Smith dragged John Hepworth through to become mixed doubles champions with Sonia Doublet and Mike Newton-Woof runners up.

Club Coaching

MatchPoint is running four club coaching nights with Jamie Russell.

The coaching will take place 8:30pm - 10:30pm on Thursday nights : June 30^th, July 7^th, 14^th and 21^st.

AGM Decisions

Well, the dust has settled after the 2004 AGM. The big news is that from this Septembers renewal, members will be able to choose from two levels of membership fees:

1. £115 full membership fee, no club-night fee for full members


2. £95 full membership fee, £1 club-night fee

That's right, you can choose which you want to do! The numbers above are for full single members, other types (concession, join, pay-n-play) will rise accordingly; full details to follow.

Issues for the AGM

Membership Fees

At the committee meeting of 6/7/4, it was decided that the club needs to increase it's income to cover increased costs. This decision hasn't been taken lightly - the membership fee has only risen £5 in the last six years!

At the AGM (26/7/4) the members will be asked to decide which of two options to select:

1. £115 full membership fee, no club-night fee for full members


2. £95 full membership fee, £1 club-night fee

Other membership fees to increase in-line.

Secretary

After many years of 200% effort, Jo Francis has decided to step down as Secretary and committee member. Having reviewed a list of the tasks that Jo has accumulated, the committee has decided to split the office into Club Secretary and Match Secretary.
